Fly Fishing Option
This special custom trip adds a fly fishing focus to the snorkeling, sea kayaking and paddle boarding activities of the Glover’s Reef itinerary. The Base-camp location on the southern edge of Glover’s Reef Atoll within a protected atoll lagoon has miles of untouched reef flats for fly fishermen to target bonefish, permit, snapper and jacks… for those with heavier gear this area is also notorious for huge tarpon. We will have a dedicated fly fishing guide and skiff available during the reef portion of the trip. Alongside the fly fishing, all the great activities for which Glover’s Reef and Island Expeditions are renowned for will also be available.
A Trip is Born
The Montana River Outfitters Belize Fly Fishing and Multi-Sport Adventure came from a meeting at a National Outfitters Conference a few years ago. Craig Madsen owner of Montana River Outfitters and Tim Boys, founder of Island Expeditions, a company that has specialized in providing outfitting services in Belize for over 30 years, found themselves talking about their mutual passion for fishing. Craig shared his vision of a modestly priced Belize vacation package that would satisfy the interests of many of his fly fishing clients, to catch flats and reef fish on a fly rod, while also adding an exciting family and couples-friendly dimension of snorkeling, paddle-boarding, sea kayaking, and inland tours, all at a reasonable price. Craig was looking for a quality Belize fly fishing experience but less expensive than the Belize and Bahamas fly fishing lodges he was familiar with. This conversation resulted in Craig and his wife traveling to Belize for a Glover’s Reef trip and creating this fly fishing and multisport trip in 2015. The staff, guides, facilities, meals, lodging – the entire experience is absolutely first rate. We have added a full time fly fishing guide with a fly fishing skiff to the standard Glover’s Reef trip. We have come up with an itinerary to provide a wonderful Belizean multi-sport experience while offering ample guided fly fishing opportunities on the flats at a remote tropical atoll off the coast of Belize. This trip offers great value and a reasonable cost.
Fly Fishing Option
This adventure travel/fly fishing trip is a fully guided experience, but not a fully guided fly fishing trip. While there will be guided options daily, including an option for fly fishing, not everyone will be able to have a fly fishing guide every day. This will not be a traditional 1 guide with 2 anglers in a boat experience; rather, fly fishing will be an option each day as will other activities like snorkeling, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, and kayak sailing. Each morning and afternoon there will be opportunities for 2-8 persons to either receive fly fishing lessons or enjoy fly fishing with a guide, or both. A skilled fly fishing guide and boat will be available each day for 5 days. Additionally, there will be opportunities in the mornings before breakfast and afternoons before dinner for self-guided wade fishing around the island. Bonefish and a variety of other flats fish are generally available at a number of locations around the island. (Craig has caught fish every morning and afternoon, before and after guided activities, while others were sleeping, relaxing, or enjoying other activities.) Fly fishing for bonefish is not the only fishing opportunity available. Spin fishers and fly anglers alike will enjoy the great variety of opportunities for reef fishing, other flats fish, including permit, as well as opportunities for traditional hand line fishing.
Enjoy a private cave adventure and tour Mayan ruins. Spend a night at a resort in the delightful Belizean town of San Ignacio, then out to the island Base-camp and white sand caves of Glover’s Atoll for fly fishing and multi-sport adventures.
